You pay the affiliate network for the actions or sales generated by theirs affiliates , and the network pays the affiliate responsible for generating them .

 Advantages : The network already has thousands of affiliates , so you don't need to spend a lot of time recruiting new ones .The network also takes care of all the affiliate payments and end of the year tax paperwork (e.g 1099 forms in the United States ). The network handles the affiliate inquiries regarding how to set up it's links schedules, and so forth .

Disadvantages : You don't get the same level of communications Access to the affiliates in some cases you don't even who they are .They are not your affiliate ; the belong to the network .If you leave the network ,you can't take the affiliates with you .costs can be prohibitive for small and or start-up businesses .

2. Use hosted affiliate hosted program software .you can pay a monthly or yearly fee for the use of the affiliate program software .this software tracks all visits ,actions and sales generated by the affiliate and automatically credits affiliates for them .

Advantages:any affiliates who come into your program are your affiliates . You have unlimited communications Access to them ,and if you opt to go with a different affiliates with you .

Disadvantages ::you start out with zero affiliates and must recruit them yourself . You are also responsible for affiliate payments and tax filling . You will have a higher level of support requirements for your affiliates ( they will be sending theirs inquiries to you rather than to an affiliate networks .

3. Use your affiliate software installed on your web server . You pay a one time fee for software to be installed on your own web server ( in some cases , there is an additional monthly or yearly support / maintenance fee).

In many cases ,this software also servers as your cart / e commerce systems , and the affiliate functions are an integral part of the order process . usually the software cab be customised to your specific requirements .

Advantages :: you have complete control over every aspects of your affiliate program . Affiliate you recruit are yours and can be imported to another solution should you choose to do so . You are not dependant on a third party sever being "up " for they generate . Over the long term , this is generally the least expensive solution.

Disadvantages ::you must recruit your own affiliates to provide support for them . You are responsible for all affiliate payments and tax filling . The standard features of the affiliate system may not be a cutting edge as those offered by a hosted solutions ( although you can overcome this with custimztion ).

A growing number of people make a full-time income as affiliates -- promoting other people's products and not dealing with any of the headaches normally associated with business ( customer support , manufacturing problems , distribution issues ,etc ) .

Even if it's not your exclusive income source, it can be an easy to implement secondary revenue stream .
